My father passed away suddenly in August 2014, as a result of suicide.
I was blissfully ignorant of suicide until it happened to me and my family. It tore us apart and sent us on a roller coaster ride of emotions: anger, confusion, guilt, self-pity and sorrow. However we didn’t allow ourselves to dwell on those negative emotions. We focused on each-other, what we were grateful for, what we had to life for and what happiness was in our futures.
In Ireland 10 people die by suicide every week. 10 people!! A fact I was ignorant of before suicide touched my life. Pieta House is an Irish organization founded 10 years ago to help people in suicidal distress and engaging in self-harm.
Each year since then my family and I take part in the Pieta House Darkness into Light fundraiser to raise vital funds to ensure Pieta House can continue to offer their life saving services. Along with hundreds of thousands of people across the Globe, in 80 locations we walk from the darkness of depression, suicidal thoughts and self-harm into the light of hope, help and the future.
